Lieutenant Colonel Sonja L. Whitehead

LTC Sonja L. Whitehead

Lieutenant Colonel Sonja L. Whitehead began her Army career in 1995 as a Broadcast Journalist in the 382nd Mobile Public Affairs Detachment, North Carolina Army National Guard. In 1998, she was commissioned in the Military Police Corps after graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Broadcast Journalism from Appalachian State University.

Her initial assignment as a 2nd Lieutenant was with the 293rd Military Police Company, 3rd Military Police Battalion at Fort Stewart, GA, where she served as a Platoon Leader and the Special Reaction Team leader. Following the Military Police Captain’s Career Course, LTC Whitehead commanded the Law Enforcement Detachment at Fort McPherson, GA for 25 months. She was then selected to serve as an instructor in the Department of Physical Education, United States Military Academy at West Point, NY and completed a Master’s degree in Exercise Science at the University of Georgia. LTC Whitehead moved to Fort Drum, where she served as the Brigade Chief of Operations for the 10th Sustainment Brigade and deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom 09-10.

After Command and Staff College at Ft Leavenworth, KS, she returned to Fort Stewart, GA where she served as the Deputy Provost Marshal for 3rd Infantry Division. LTC Whitehead deployed as the Executive Officer for the Division Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion, 3rd Infantry Division to Kandahar, Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

LTC Whitehead was then assigned to the U.S. Army Forces Command Headquarters to serve as the Military Police Organizational Integrator and completed the Army Force Management Course. She was then selected as the FORSCOM G-3/5/7 Executive Officer. LTC Whitehead takes command of the 519th Military Police Battalion, 16th Military Police Brigade, at Fort Polk, Louisiana in September.

LTC Whitehead is a graduate of the Army Force Management Course, Army Command and Staff College, Combined Arms Service and Staff School, Military Police Officer’s Basic and Captain’s Career Courses, Special Reaction Team phase I course, Protective Service Training and the ARNG Mountain Warfare School. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Broadcast Journalism from Appalachian State University and a Master of Science in Exercise Science from the University of Georgia. LTC Whitehead’s awards include the Bronze Star Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal (2nd OLC), the Army Achievement Medal (2nd OLC), National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, NATO Medal, the Meritorious Unit Citation (1st OLC) and the German Armed Forces Efficiency Badge, Gold.
