Originally from Memphis, TN, CSM James Hooten enlisted in the Army in August of 1989. His assignments have included C/3-75 Ranger Regiment at Fort Benning, GA; HHC/4-87 Infantry at Schofield Barracks, HI; C/1-75 Ranger Regiment at Hunter Army Airfield, GA; C Co 5th Ranger Training Brigade at Camp Merrill in Dahlonega, GA; 75th Ranger Regimental Headquarters at Fort Benning, GA; E/3-11 Officer Candidate School, HHC/2-69 Armor Battalion, HHC/3BSTB, and 2-29 Infantry at Fort Benning, Ga; HHC/2-327 Infantry at Fort Campbell, KY; 1-36 Infantry at Fort Bliss, TX; and Operations Group at JRTC, Fort Polk Louisiana.

CSM Hooten has served in many enlisted positions to include; Rifleman, Grenadier, Sniper, Sniper Team Leader, Rifle Team Leader, Squad Leader, Ranger Instructor, Assistant Operations Sergeant, Platoon Sergeant, First Sergeant, Operations Sergeant Major, and Command Sergeant Major.

CSM Hooten has deployed in support of Operation Uphold Democracy in the Republic of Haiti; in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom twice, and in support of Operation Enduring Freedom four times.

CSM Hooten’s Military Schools include: Airborne School, Ranger Indoctrination Program, Sniper School, Ranger School, Special Operations Target Interdiction, Special Operations Training, Pathfinder, Jumpmaster, Mountain Warfare Summer Course, Instructor Training Course, Tactics Certification Course, Combat Lifesaver, Warrior Leader’s Course, Advanced Leader’s Course, the Senior Leader’s Course where he graduated on the Commandant’s List, Master Resilience Instructor Course, and is also a graduate of Class 64, United States Army Sergeants Major Academy.

CSM Hooten’s awards and decorations include; Bronze Star Medal third award, Meritorious Service Medal fifth award, Army Commendation Medal fifth award, Army Achievement Award sixth award, Armed Forces expeditionary Medal second award, Over Seas Ribbon second award, Humanitarian Service Ribbon, Iraqi Campaign Medal with two campaign stars, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with two campaign stars, GWOT Service Medal, GWOT Expeditionary Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal eighth award, National Defense Service Medal second award, NCO Professional Development Ribbon 4th level, Over Seas Ribbon second award, Army Service Ribbon, NATO Medal, Ranger Tab, Master Parachutist Badge, Driver’s Badge, and the Canadian Parachutist Badge.
