Joint Readiness Training Center, 3rd BN, 353rd Regiment - Security Force Assistance (SFA)

Course Description:

Train, Advise, and Assist Command Course:

3rd Battalion, 353rd Regiment, Operations Group, JRTC conducts the Train, Advise and Assist Command (TAAC) course for the Army in order to train headquarters units (Division-level and higher) on the skills they need to effectively understand how to support advising teams for operations in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Leaders attending TAAC will get detailed, small-group instruction on Functional based SFA, best practices from JCISFA, history of advising, Afghan/Iraqi government, Afghan/Iraq logistics, judicial class, and protecting the team.

TAAC is an intense 3-day Program of Instruction conducted at the unit level and scheduled according to unit needs. The course size is up to 140 students per class. Students are billeted at North Fort Polk, with a mess facility, MWR facility, gym and shoppette available for student use.

Security Force Assistance Course:

3rd Battalion, 353rd Regiment, Operations Group, JRTC conducts the Security Force Assistance (SFA) course for the Army in order to train units and leaders on the skills they need to effectively advise counterparts in support of operations in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Soldiers attending SFA will get detailed, small-group instruction and practical exercise in interpersonal communication skills including: using an interpreter, cross-cultural communication, negotiating techniques, leader engagements, building rapport, understanding human behavior, and protecting the team. They also receive functionally-based SFA and advisement training, with a focus on engagements with HNSF role players recruited from Afghanistan and Iraq; many of the role players are simulating the same occupation they previously held in their respective country. The soldiers conduct multiple engagements with the cultural role players, giving them a chance to practice their skills in a realistic environment.

In addition, they are provided language training as well as an in-depth familiarization of the culture and environment of the area to which they are deploying. They are also given training on media engagements, insider threats and training Host Nation security forces.

SFA is an intense 7-10 day Program of Instruction conducted at the unit level and scheduled according to unit needs. The course size is up to 140 students per class. Students are billeted at North Fort Polk, with a mess facility, MWR facility, gym and shoppette available for student use.
